README file for X11R6 on OpenBSD/mac68k 2.2 The release of X11R6 for OpenBSD 2.2 for the Macintosh 68k class of computers is the first release of X Windows for this architecture of OpenBSD. At this time, the X server does not yet support color video and runs in black and white exclusively. Unlike most other X distributions for OpenBSD, the mac68k X Windows system is distributed as one, large tar'ed and gzip'ed file. This file will unpack into a directory called X11R6/, so most people will want to unpack the tarball from /usr with a command like: # cat X11R6.tar.gz | (cd /usr; tar zxf - ) The distribution requires about 35 megabytes of disk space to run comfortably. However, you must also have the requisite disk to store the tar'ed, gzip'ed distribution as well. In order to run X11 binaries once you have unpacked the distribution, you will need to add /usr/X11R6/bin (or the equivalent) to your PATH environment variable. Also, it is critical that /usr/X11R6/lib (or its equivalent) be added to the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Also note that this server is built against the shared libraries from OpenBSD 2.2. If, for example, you do not have libc version 17, these binaries will not work for you. Do to the numerous improvements made to OpenBSD between the 2.1 and 2.2 releases, it is highly recommended to upgrade to 2.2 in any case, but in order for X Windows to function at all, you must be running a 2.2 system. Since this is a first-release of this server code for this operating system, there will doubtless be bugs. Please feel free to contact the mac68k port maintainer with bug reports, comments, thoughts, etc. To do this, send email to Gene Skonicki (gene@OpenBSD.org).
